New Voices in Tech 2019
The YOW! New Voices in Tech speaker development program is part of our effort to encourage gender diversity in tech conference speakers. Selected participants receive a full day training workshop with technical speaking expert Damian Conway.
Here are the YOW! 2019 New Voices in Tech:
Effy Elden is a 24-year-old non-binary trans girl who works as a consultant software developer for ThoughtWorks in Melbourne. As an avid technologist they are passionate about DevOps enablement and cloud infrastructure, and in their spare time, they pursue activism in the fields of digital privacy and queer rights.
As a Customer Operations Engineer at Confluent, Evelyn is responsible for the ongoing support of Apache Kafka and Confluent created components utilised alongside it. She is actively involved in the Apache Kafka community and has been involved in the broader Open Source community for the past few years since working with Apache Cassandra, Spark and other Open Source projects at Instaclustr. Evelyn is also a member of the growing community of trans developers.
Fiona is a data scientist at Eliiza, a ML/AI consulting company. After years spent as an analyst in the tech industry, she decided to put her maths degree to good use and make the hop to data science. She helps to organise the Melbourne chapter of the Women in Machine Learning and Data Science meetup. She is slowly working her way through her Masters in Astrophysics in her spare time.
Over 18 years of experience in analysis, design and software development, this experience incorporated over five year of project management work, leading and directing teams.
I have 15 years software development experience with the last ten years spent working with medium to large data. I have a passion for exploration, optimisation and best practices. I enjoy developing and mentoring teams and experimenting with new technology. I prefer to be technology agnostic and am focused on finding the right solution for a problem.
I am a data engineer currently working at ThoughtWorks. I started out as a software engineer before moving into the data space. Here I have worked as a data engineer and machine learning engineer. I am passionate about all things data and machine learning . I am especially interested in ways to apply software engineering best practices to data and machine learning.
Melissa Houghton is a full stack Software Engineer at Bankwest, working on the Online Banking. She has a passion for technology, learning and giving back to the community. She is an organiser for DDD Perth and has previously been involved in other NFP organisations such as CoderDojo and Rotary Youth Leadership Camps. Originally from California, Melissa loves to travel, drink wine and learn new things.
I work as a Senior Developer in Atlassian, in Jira Frontend Platform team, which is responsible for architectural guidelines and direction of frontend development in JIra and developing automated tools and processes to support that. Most of my free time I spend hiking and exploring Sydney and its surroundings with my camera.
Nelly is a lead developer who has been always in IT industry in whole her career. Quite interested in sharing her knowledge by contributing to the communities, conferences, meetups, user groups and brown bags. Shohre Mansouri is graduated software engineer from a university in Tehran. She has been working as a software engineer for more than 18 years, developing business applications. She works for ThoughtWorks as a senior software developer and in her spare time she pursues her activism in the fields of animals rights.
