15 March, 2020
YOW! Conferences is actively and continuously monitoring the COVID-19 virus outbreak in line with Australian Government public health advice and the World Health Organization (WHO).
On 11 March 2020, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the novel coronavirus outbreak a pandemic. As of 13 March, Australian government and health authorities had only recommended against gatherings of more than 500 people. However, based on the increasing community transmission in Australia, the recent instances of transmission occurring at conferences in other countries, and the advice from WHO on social distancing, we believe it is the responsible course of action to cancel YOW! Data 2020, which was scheduled for April 29 – May 1. We have also postponed our New Voices in Tech workshop from 20 May to 14 October.
Our September and December conferences are currently planned to take place as scheduled. Refunds will be available for ticket purchasers who are affected by COVID-19 (eg: they are unwell, quarantined or prevented from travelling by employer/government restrictions). Refunds will also be issued in the event that we have to cancel the conference. The health and safety of our attendees, exhibitors, speakers and staff is our number one priority and we are investigating options for partial and fully remote events should the situation change.
With the situation evolving rapidly, we strongly urge our attendees and exhibitors to refer to the latest health alert information from the Australian Health Department available here:
The Australian Health department recommends that everyone should practise good hygiene to protect against infections. Good hygiene includes:
- washing your hands often with soap and water
- using a tissue and covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze
- avoiding close contact with others, such as touching
